Milan Wine Week Awards Celebrate Italy’s Wine Lists and Restaurant Culture

Italy’s leading restaurants take center stage at the Annual Awards, honoring outstanding wine lists, wine retailers and the professionals who bring wine to the table.

Wine is facing a challenging period, with consumption declining and drinking habits changing. Yet in fine dining, the passion for wine remains strong. Restaurants continue to curate lists featuring hundreds of labels, young sommeliers are making their mark, and establishments are investing in carefully selected wines, attentive service and expert guidance for diners. That commitment was on display at the 2026 Milano Wine Week Awards, which featured the sixth edition of the Premio Carta dei Vini, recognizing Italian restaurants, wine shops, dining-room professionals and initiatives that promote wine culture.

The ceremony took place on Monday, Oct. 19, at the Marriott Hotel in Milan as part of the ninth edition of Milano Wine Week. Organized by MWW Group, the awards included the Premio Carta Vini Italia, the Best Italian Wine Selection, which recognizes international wine lists that showcase Italian wines, and the Premio Wine Retail Italia, dedicated to wine shops and distributors. Alongside awards recognizing broad and diverse selections, the program included more specialized categories, such as Carta Visionaria and Carta delle Acque, as well as an award for Best Value for Money.

Pricing remains a key issue. Markups on restaurant wine lists can be steep, but the price of a bottle at the table reflects more than the wine itself. It also covers the work of sourcing, selecting and storing bottles, as well as the expertise required to serve them properly. The challenge is to make that value clear while giving diners choices that suit their budgets and expectations. With that in mind, Federico Gordini, President of Milano Wine Week, has proposed that restaurants offer a selection of wines priced under €25, making wine more accessible to younger customers and anyone looking for a more affordable option.

“The Awards were created to recognize the value of those who work every day to make wine the centerpiece of an experience that goes beyond simply tasting it,” Gordini said. “Behind every wine list, recommendation and selection are research, expertise and a deep understanding of the region. With these awards, we want to shine a light on work that often goes unrecognized but is essential to bringing the public closer to the world of wine.

“At a time when drinking habits and market demands are changing, we believe it is important to recognize those who know how to respond to this evolution by finding new ways to communicate and engage with consumers. From restaurant dining rooms and wine shops to Italian restaurants abroad, these professionals create new opportunities for people to discover wine every day and help shape the future of the industry.”

The jury, chaired by Andrea Grignaffini, reviewed dozens of wine lists submitted across the various award categories.
